Bangkok is huge, and where you stay decides how much of your trip you spend stuck in traffic. Two places that look close on the map can easily be an hour apart by taxi at rush hour. Choose the right base, and the whole city is a short train ride away.
There are two areas I know well and recommend to almost anyone: Asok, if you want energy, nightlife and the best connections in the city, and Lumpini, if you prefer a calmer trip with a big park on your doorstep. In this guide, I’ll show you what each area is like, which hotels I recommend, and how to decide where to stay in Bangkok.
Why Asok and Lumpini?
In Bangkok, the trains are everything. The BTS Skytrain and the MRT subway glide past the traffic jams that can paralyze the roads, especially during rush hour. Staying right next to a station is the biggest upgrade you can give your trip, and both Asok and Lumpini deliver exactly that.
The two areas also complement each other perfectly. The MRT Blue Line connects Lumphini and Sukhumvit (Asok) stations in just three stops, so even if you stay in the quiet one, the lively one is only minutes away. And if you prefer to walk, the revamped Green Bridge, a 1.6-kilometer elevated walking and cycling path, links Lumpini Park with Benjakitti Park, a short walk from Asok.
Staying in Asok: Bangkok’s Best-Connected Neighborhood
Asok is where Bangkok’s two main train lines meet: BTS Asok station on the Skytrain and MRT Sukhumvit station on the subway are connected right at the junction. That makes it one of the most convenient places to stay in the whole city.
From here, CentralWorld and the Siam malls are only a few BTS stops away. The MRT takes you straight to Sanam Chai station next to Wat Pho without changing trains, and the Grand Palace is a short walk from there. For the river, take the BTS to Siam and change to the Silom line to Saphan Taksin, where the river boats leave. And when the roads are jammed at rush hour, you simply ride above or below it all.
Terminal 21: Your Mall Next Door
Right at the junction sits Terminal 21, a mall designed like an airport terminal, with each floor themed after a different city. It’s much more than a place to shop:
- The food court is the cheapest one I know in Bangkok, with a huge choice of Thai dishes at street-food prices, in air-conditioned comfort.
- SF Cinema is a great choice for a movie night.
- Sushi Plus is my go-to sushi spot inside the mall.

Nightlife: Bars, Rooftops and Pool Tables
Asok is one of the best bases in Bangkok if you like to go out. Sukhumvit Soi 11, between Asok and Nana, is packed with bars and restaurants. A few of my favorites in the area:
- Above Eleven, a rooftop bar on Soi 11 with views over the city.
- The Sportsman Sports Bar and Restaurant, perfect for a game of pool and watching sports.
- Don’t Open the Fridge, one of the good bars nearby.
And yes, Nana is just one BTS stop away for those who want it, and just as easy to avoid for those who don’t. For more ideas, see my list of Bangkok’s best bars.
Where to Stay in Asok: Jasmine City Hotel
My advice for staying in Asok is simple: stay as close to the junction as you can. In Bangkok’s heat, every minute you don’t have to walk counts.
The hotel I can recommend is Jasmine City Hotel, only a few minutes from the junction. The rooms are spacious, the suites come with a separate living area and a work desk, and the views over Asok are great. There’s a pool with fountains, plus a separate kids pool, which makes it a good pick for families too.

The Radisson Blu right next door is another good option in the same location.
Asok is for you if you want the best transport connections, cheap eats and nightlife on your doorstep. It’s especially popular with younger travelers, but its convenience makes it a smart base for almost anyone.
Staying Near Lumpini: Bangkok’s Green Side
If Asok is Bangkok at full speed, Lumpini is where the city slows down. The area is built around Lumpini Park, one of the largest green spaces in central Bangkok, and it’s my pick for quieter trips.
The park is perfect for relaxing in the shade, going for a jog, and watching the famous monitor lizards wander across the lawns. It’s hard to believe you’re in the middle of one of Asia’s busiest cities.
My tip: stay close to Lumpini MRT station (signed as Lumphini). You’ll have the subway at your door and a direct entrance to One Bangkok, the area’s best mall. Dusit Central Park, with its rooftop park overlooking Lumpini, is also within walking distance.

One Bangkok: The Mall That Feels Like Home
One Bangkok is the newest development in the area, and it quickly became my “home mall” whenever I stay near Lumpini:
- The food court on the top floor is excellent.
- The cinema is very modern.
- Sushiro is very good if you love conveyor belt sushi.

Where to Stay Near Lumpini: Aetas Lumpini or SO/ Bangkok
Aetas Lumpini offers great value for money, with a central location and rooms overlooking the park and the skyline.
If you want the very best, SO/ Bangkok, right across from Lumpini Park, is the ultimate splurge in the area.

Getting Around from Lumpini
Staying in Lumpini doesn’t mean missing out. When you feel like a night out, the MRT gets you to Asok in three stops. For shopping, a bus up Ratchadamri Road takes you to CentralWorld. And just like from Asok, the Blue Line takes you straight to Wat Pho at Sanam Chai station without changing trains.
Lumpini is for you if you want a calmer base with green space, great food and easy access to the rest of the city. It’s ideal for quieter trips, runners and anyone who wants to escape the chaos at the end of the day.

What About Other Areas?
Bangkok has plenty of other neighborhoods that can work well. Here’s why I prefer Asok and Lumpini for most trips:
- Khao San Road: the legendary backpacker street, but there’s no Skytrain or subway station within easy walking distance, so you’ll rely on taxis and boats.
- Siam: the shopping heart of the city with great connections, but busy and very commercial.
- Riverside: beautiful views and some of the city’s most famous luxury hotels, but most are further from the train lines.
- Silom and Sathorn: the business district right next to Lumpini, lively after work and a good alternative if the Lumpini hotels are fully booked.
Practical Tips for Your Stay
- From Suvarnabhumi Airport: take the Airport Rail Link to Makkasan, then walk to MRT Phetchaburi. From there, it’s one stop to Sukhumvit (Asok) or four stops to Lumphini.
- Get a local SIM card as soon as you land, so you can use Grab and maps right away. Here’s my guide to the best Thailand SIM card.
- Paying: Thailand runs on QR payments. My guide to scan to pay in Thailand explains how visitors can use it.
- Timing: check the best time to visit Thailand before you book.
My Recommendation: Where to Stay in Bangkok
You can’t really go wrong with either area. If you want Bangkok at full speed, with the best connections, cheap eats and nightlife around the corner, stay in Asok. If you’d rather end your days with a walk in the park and a quieter night, choose Lumpini. And since they’re only three stops apart, you can always enjoy the best of both.
Where to Stay in Bangkok: FAQ
What is the best area to stay in Bangkok for first-timers?
For most first-time visitors, Asok is the best area to stay in Bangkok. It’s where the BTS Skytrain and the MRT subway meet, so malls, temples and the river are easy to reach, and you’ll have food, shopping and nightlife on your doorstep.
Is Asok or Lumpini better for a quiet trip?
Lumpini. Staying in Asok means energy and nightlife, while Lumpini offers a big park, modern malls and a calmer atmosphere, with Asok only three MRT stops away.
How do I get from the airport to Asok?
From Suvarnabhumi Airport, take the Airport Rail Link to Makkasan, walk to MRT Phetchaburi and ride one stop to Sukhumvit station at Asok. A Grab or taxi is easier if you have a lot of luggage.
Are there good hotels near Lumpini Park?
Yes. For great value, I recommend Aetas Lumpini, and for luxury, SO/ Bangkok across from the park. Staying near Lumpini MRT station gives you the best mix of park, subway and One Bangkok.
